Passage

Project Info

2001

Linking the two sides of the college campus, the pedestrian bridge is comprised of a geometric tubular space frame that encases a cement walkway. At night, lighting is provided by 52 lit pavers inserted in the cement and hundreds of small fiber-optic lights installed in the framework. Designed to visually depict the college’s educational mandate, signs and symbols are integrated into the steel framework to remind visitors of the college’s curriculum and mission. From a distance the structure presents the powerful image of a tubular matrix of information, data, and symbols – a conveyor of knowledge. For the pedestrian, it provides both a creative solution to a practical problem, and a visual metaphor for the adventurous process of learning.
