Vortex

Project Info

2002

This entry canopy provides a patient drop-off area for the Wills Eye Hospital and provides direct access to the Walnut Towers grade-level facility. The canopy takes its name and form from the idea of a black hole, a cosmological vortex. Just as a vortex collects matter, the canopy’s many folds and funnel-like shape enable it to collect rain-water. When it rains, viewers can hear the rain hitting the metal structure and see the water cascading like a waterfall into the hole of the canopy’s central drain.
